The First Pitch for the Planet

by Becky Parker

The first Pitch for the Planet by Project Earth

What an absolutely brilliant (a major understatement) day it’s been at The Royal Institution for the very first , a day showcasing the exceptional ingenuity of school children around the world regarding climate solutions, spearheaded by the immensely inspiring Becky Parker and her co-organisers at Project Earth.

There were so many creative ideas: methane capture in barns, hydrocarbon-producing algae, utilising dead space of car parks and commercial rooftops for solar farms, using satellite data to detect and predict illegal fishing, community climate cafés, ideas for reducing food waste in schools, devices for monitoring the conditions of your compost at home, the list really goes on!

There were some epic guest talks from Mark Miodownik, Professor of Materials and Society UCL, Royal Society Professor of Public Engagement with Science, Abbi Davis, the CrEST Director of Global Development at UCSC and super outreach facilitator, explosive chemistry experiments with Nathan Turner, award-winning environmental educator, Edd Moore, the hugely influential author of Lessons in Chemistry, Bonnie Garmus, renewable energy expert and author of Power Up, Yasmin Ali, and even from an astronaut, Meganne Christian, about her journey to where she is.

What an enormous honour it is to be an adviser for Project Earth, Becky’s dedication to empowering and inspiring young people into research is truly unparalleled. Huge thank you to everybody involved and of course to First Light Fusion for supporting my involvement with Project Earth, the future is a brighter place after today!
