Professor Becky Shipley

Becky is Professor of Healthcare Engineering at University College London. Becky has a background in mathematics and computation and her research lies at the intersection of engineering, computing and healthcare. For example, her team have developed computational frameworks to better understand how diseased and damaged tissues function and repair, including in cancer and nerve injury, as well as data-driven models in physiology. During the pandemic, Becky co-led the UCL-Ventura programme which designed and manufactured non-invasive ventilators, deployed across the NHS and globally via a programme of local manufacturing hubs and international donations to over 30 countries.

Becky is an advocate for healthcare engineering, innovation and the translation of scientific discoveries into practice. Becky led the UCL Institute of Healthcare Engineering (2018-2024) and was Non-Executive Director at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital (2020-2024). Now she is Chief Research Officer at UCLPartners, a healthcare innovation agency focused on improving patient outcomes and increasing operational efficiency in the NHS, and Director of Research for OneLondon.
