2024 The warmest year on record

by Becky Parker

Today, 10th January 2025, Copernicus announced 2024 is confirmed by the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) to be the warmest year on record globally, and the first calendar year that the average global temperature exceeded 1.5°C above its pre-industrial level.

We at Project Earth want to support young people to act and innovate in the face of the worsening impacts of climate change.  We are affiliated to the Earthshot Prize and have a phenomenal group of Advisors who are ready to support and help with ideas from young people.

Young people have amazing ideas and creativity and we have found in testing Project Earth in a number of schools, that working on positive projects is empowering and helps alleviate climate anxiety.

Our aim is the be the enablers for young people across the world to have their ideas developed and taken seriously.  Most initiatives like this offer support for 18-25 year olds.  Our view is that students from 5-18 should be supported and encouraged to think about how their future could be different, and we have seen imaginative and original ideas across the areas which Project Earth focusses on –

  1. Technological Innovation:

We provide a platform through which young people can present innovative technological concepts that can be harnessed to combat environmental challenges.

  1. Social Transformation:

We provide young people with the opportunity to develop and share ideas on how social and behavioural change can be utilised as a tool to help combat climate change both locally and globally.

  1. Cultural Exchange:

We aim to empower young people to use creative storytelling to explore and share their cultural heritage in relation to the environment, thus facilitating a better understanding of how climate change is variously affecting communities around the world.

We are in the early stages of development and are aiming to offer more and more support as we grow.  As an example – I offered Project Earth as an enrichment activity in the school where I teach, and nearly half the sixth form embraced it and are developing some fantastic ideas.  Having agency in their future has led to them developing ideas, collaboration, research and teamwork.  We are building a movement of informed, inspired and empowered young people who will understand that climate change is something that can be tackled and there are many opportunities for them to contribute.
