Dr Matthew Winning is a Lecturer in Economics of Sustainability at the UCL Institute for Sustainable Resources and a stand-up comedian who performs live climate change comedy shows. He is also an author, broadcaster and keynote speaker.
Matthew was previously the Head of Climate Research at global consultancy Oxford Economics where he provided expertise and expert knowledge on various aspects of climate change analysis and assisted the company’s research agenda and Global Economic Model development. He produced research briefs across a number of climate-related topics and helped communicate complex topics, such as the NGFS and IPCC scenarios, to clients in easy-to-digest ways.
Matthew is also involved in many public engagement and outreach activities as a climate comedian. He wrote the UCL Handbook on Communicating Climate Change and his debut popular-science book Hot Mess: What On Earth Can We Do About Climate Change – a comedy book explaining global warming – was released in November 2021 and has been transalated into Dutch and Chinese. Matt has a TEDx talk on using humour to communicate climate change and has performed many live climate comedy shows at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, COP28, BAFTA, UK Schools Climate Assembly and various science festivals around the UK. Matthew hosted the BBC Radio 4 shows Net Zero: A Very British Problem and Mark Watson and Matt Winning: Seriously, Though, The Planet and appeared on The Now Show, The News Quiz, Best Medicine (all BBC Radio 4) and The Verb (BBC Radio 3). He has written articles for various newspapers and given keynote talks at numerous industry events.
